Getting started with Microsoft mobile phone

Today I will be talking about a Microsoft mobile phone (formerly Nokia Lumia devices) running Windows 8.1 OS going up. It has come to my attention; well based on a number of customers coming to our IT Shop in Area 18, on the problems most of the users of these Microsoft phones are having.

Here are a few things you have to know when you are getting a brand new or second hand Microsoft mobile.

"A brand-new Microsoft " before you use it make sure you have an Internet connection available and first things first Setup your Microsoft Account. This is any email account you have under microsoft (outlook, live or hotmail). It's a very important aspect on your device as it will help you have access to any microsoft product. Without this you can't install any apps on the phone. Well some might say otherwise but skipping the Microsoft account can only lead to more pressing matters in the near future when you are failing to update the phone, and yes things get tougher on this device, up to the very extent of requiring you to do a factory reset because you hesitated to sign in a Microsoft Account.

"A second - hand Microsoft" when you are buying a phone from another user/friend, it's very important that you let the seller do a factory reset on the phone before they hand you the device. Here's why this is more important,

firstly, it's a privacy issue ...I don't suppose you would want or feel alright if someone somewhere had remote access and they could open your emails, contacts or anything else on the phone (take note: when you sign in your Microsoft Account on any computer you can have access to files stored on your phone which were backed up on a cloud)  So reseting to factory settings wipes out the device and it removes all together their previous Microsoft Account giving you room to sign in your appropriate account.

Secondly, if the seller doesn't wipe the phone and lets you use their Microsoft account, later as you are using the device, it might require you to update an app and in the windows store, at often times a prompt pops up asking for a password to the email account in the phone which is acting as a primary credential. Right there is when you realise you don't know their password and even when you ask the people who sold you, chances are, they lost a password of that account too. And it comes like a bitter reality that you must wipe the phone and lose everything you had instantly so you can have a new version of Whatsapp lol, is it worthy the trouble?

So you get my point now? When buying second hand Microsoft Phone, wipe it before using it
1. Wipe
2. Sign in Microsoft Account
3. Then you can use freely.

If it's Brand new
1. Sign in Microsoft Account
2. Then use freely

NB: if you don't have any microsoft related email account, you can always sign up for a new one. And if you have a Windows 10 device you can also use a non-microsoft email account (Gmail, yahoo etc)
